Meet Our Founder
Welcome to Global Village Artisans! I’m Ashley, and I’m thrilled to share the story of our family-run social enterprise with you.
Our journey began with a deep passion for traditional handcrafts and a love for the vibrant cultures around the world.
Growing up surrounded by beautiful handmade objects, I developed a profound appreciation for creativity and craftsmanship. These artisanal treasures, each telling a unique story, inspired me to honour and preserve traditional handcrafts in a way that celebrates both the craft and the craftspeople.
Global Village Artisans emerged from this inspiration, dedicated to supporting the cultural heritage of artisans from diverse regions. Based in New Zealand, we are committed to fostering global connections and sustainability through our carefully curated collection of homewares, decor, heirloom children’s toys, and books. Each item in our collection is selected for its authenticity, craftsmanship, and cultural significance.
My background in Expressive Arts Therapy has been instrumental in shaping our mission and approach. In my work, I discovered the healing and transformative powers of creativity as a means for social change. Working with various groups, I used creative processes and arts as our language to communicate. This therapeutic perspective continues to influence the work I do with Global Village Artisans, the artisans we collaborate with, their creative processes, and sharing their stories.
Our story is a global one, with roots in South Africa, Europe, and my husband’s heritage from Thailand, now interwoven into our life in New Zealand. This diverse background enriches my perspective and fuels our commitment to cultural appreciation and sustainable living.
Our mission is to create a positive impact by working closely with indigenous artisans and Fair Trade organizations. We ensure that every product we offer is crafted with respect and a deep connection to tradition. From skilled weavers in Sri Lanka and Bhutan to talented artisans across Africa, our partners help us promote cultural appreciation, environmental stewardship, and fair trade practices.
Thank you for joining us in our mission to celebrate global craftsmanship and make a meaningful difference. Every piece we offer is a celebration of ‘Aroha,’ bringing joy, beauty, and a connection to the rich history and culture of its creators into your home.
With love and gratitude,
Ashley
